Images from 2021 Outings

Tue, 23rd Feb 2021 Outing – City Walk – Photo 2021 International Festival

The Mid-Month Excursion is Back!

With a good touch of optimism we have decided to re-start our Mid-Month Excursions. Anyway, see how we go.

The Photo 2021 International Festival is on this month and there is a cluster of exhibitions within easy walking distance of each other in the east end of the City. Two are at 45 Downstairs in Flinders Lane. In the upstairs gallery are the surprising and idiosyncratic street photography images of Mike Reed, and downstairs the work of Pat Brassington is displayed under the title ‘Night Swimming’. The catalogue refers to Brassington’s work as ‘exposing how the endless possibilities of our deep and complex inner states, its narratives of sex, memory and identity, run quietly rampant.’ Need I say any more? Around the corner in Exhibition Street in the Tolarno Gallery is an exhibition of the work of Justine Varga, and the work of Simon Fujiwara is shown in the Anna Schwartz Gallery on Flinders Lane near Russell Street. Other displays (by Sara Oscar) are found in AC/DC Lane just off Flinders Lane, and in the Sofitel Hotel (Sara Cwynar). What a plethora or riches and all within walking distance.

We will meet at 10.30am in the central atrium of Collins Place. There are number of places around its edge where we can buy a coffee. It is quite spacious, so social distancing should not be a problem. Remember to bring a mask. After coffee, we will just walk across to 45 Downstairs to view the first exhibition.
You are all most welcome to join us!

Tue, 23rd Mar 2021 Outing – Monash Gallery of Art

This outing will be to the Monash Gallery of Art to see the exhibition “Not Standing Still” and includes a curator’s explanation of the various works on dispaly. The gallery is located at 860 Ferntree Gully Road Wheelers Hill.

The curators explanation will commence at 11AM.

Unfortunately, the gallery cafe does not open until 11 AM and it is suggested that anyone wanting coffee before viewing the exhibition bring a thermos and we can have our traditional coffee in the gardens behind the gallery.

Lunch will be at the Wheelers Hill Hotel, which is in Ferntree Gully Road and directly opposite the gallery.

Regards

Jim O’Donnell

Tue April 6 Outing – City Architecture

We will return to the City, the top end of Swanston Street, near RMIT.

There is some very interesting architecture in that part of town, and it continues to grow, you only have to look upwards.
Examples – although the building on the cnr. of Queensberry & Bouverie Sts has been there quite a few years, it is always interesting; and closer to the city the Metro Tunnel which has taken over Franklin Street, between RMIT and the City Baths, the walkways on either side of the construction site have interesting art-photography on display.

We shall meet at 10.30 am in the Dining Hall, 2nd floor of Melbourne Central Complex. If entering from the cnr. of Swanston and Latrobe street, take the escalator right at the corner up one flight to the 2nd floor and walk straight ahead. There is a big selection of cafes, Pazzi per la Pizza is on the left hand side at the entrance and could be a good place to gather.

And for lunch at approx. 12.30pm we will to the The Oxford Scholar Hotel, as it’s now known, 427 Swanston Street.

This event will held in a COVID safe manner.
All Melbourne and Camberwell Camera Club members are very welcome.

Tue, 20th April 2021 Outing – Alfred Nicholas Memorial Garden
Autumn is the time when the deciduous trees provide us with the most beautiful colours.

Our next excursion will be to one of the best places to see and photograph this, the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Garden in Sherbrooke in the Dandenong Ranges (Melway 75 G1).

Its ornamental lake and arched bridges seem to echo Monet’s Giverny Garden outside Paris. The contrast between the majestic mountain ash trees and the autumn colours around them is a particularly photogenic feature of this Garden. Hopefully the weather gods will be in a cooperative mood on the day.  The garden covers a slope with the ornamental lake at the bottom of the gully. You may wish to bring a hiking stick and a bottle of water for the walk back up to the park entrance.

Meeting place is the Ripe Cafe, diagonally opposite the T-junction of the Mountain Highway & Mt. Dandenong Tourist Road in Sassafras (Melway 66 F9).

The Ripe Café is in a cottage set back a little from the road.

Time: 10.30am.

If we wish, we can also return to the same place for lunch. After morning coffee, we will drive to the Alfred Nicholas Garden. There is an off-road car park opposite the entrance.

Tue May 4 – Melbourne General Cemetery (MCC)
Melbourne Camera Club Mid-Week Outing

Date: Tuesday 4th May, 2021

Destination: Melbourne General Cemetery – Parkville

Meeting at 10.30 am at the Naughty Boy Eatery, 499-501 Lygon St., Parkville.

Closest public transport: East Coburg (1) or Moreland (6) trams along Lygon St., stop 117, Richardson St.

We will enter the cemetery via the North Gate, in MacPherson Street.

Lunch: approx. 12.30 pm, Great Northern Hotel, 644 Rathdowne St, (cnr. Pigdon Sts) Carlton North.

The Melbourne General Cemetery is a 110 acre necropolis located 2 km north of the city in Carlton. It was established by an act of the New South Wales Parliament in 1850 and the cemetery was opened on the 1st June 1853. Since its opening, close to a million people have been buried in the cemetery and it is the last resting place for many famous Australians.

The 500 metre walk to the pub features interesting architecture.

Tue May 25 – Moorabbin Aircraft Museum (4th Tue – CCC)

I planned this excursion in March last year. Hopefully this year it will happen and many of you will come.

Together with Melbourne CC we are planning to visit the Aircraft Museum in Moorabbin (Plus Code: 23FR+CQ).

There you can take great shots inside aeroplane cockpits, look down on aircraft repair workshops, and pose with a vintage aeroplane. Quite apart from which, taking close-ups of specific parts of aircraft mechanisms.

This Museum provides a very interesting tableau of the development of civil aviation in Australia – the days of TAA, Ansett, etc.

We plan to meet at 10.30am in the Fight Deck Bar and Grill, corner of First Ave. and Bundora Pde. It is just north of the air traffic control tower (Melway: 87G, Plus Code: 23FW+C3).

From there it is a short walk to the Aircraft Museum.

At 11am we will get a conducted tour of the exhibition. Entrance fee: $10 / $7 concession.

We plan to return to the Flight Deck Bar and Grill for lunch.

Hope to see you there.
