Mid-Week Outing – Thursday, 5th March – 1st Thursday – Moomba Water Skiing
*** This is a Thursday Outing ***
The Moomba Masters water skiing is an annual tradition on the Yarra River at Moomba. Our March midweek outing will take us to the river for some action sports photography.
The Moomba Masters event runs from Thursday to Monday, so to fit with that schedule our Midweek outing will be held on Thursday 5th Mar. The Thursday and Friday activities are for junior competitors.
There are a variety of events including slalom, tricks, wakeboard, and jumps. Each provide their own interest and challenges to photograph, with the varying direction of the sun during the day providing opportunities for front light, side light and back light photography. There are also nighttime events to challenge your low light photography skills. Spectacular water sprays, upside down skiers, skiers engulfed in water and wipeouts are common, while the murky water of the Yarra adds to the colour palette. You can also capture portraits and abstract photos to round out your collection for the day.
As well as the water skiing there is always plenty of attractions and rides at the Moomba carnival to keep you occupied.
Bring a long lens and shoot at shutter speeds of 1/2000s or faster on continuous burst mode to freeze the action that may only be a blur to the naked eye. A 300mm+ lens is best if you have one, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t as some of the actions happens close to the shore.
Camberwell Camera Club member Ian Spence is a regular at the Moomba Masters and here is a link to a selection of his photos from recent years to get you motivated: https://ianspence.pixieset.com/moombamastersformidweek/
The program of events is: Moomba Masters Schedule
We will meet at the NGV Café in the Atrium, Federation Square, opposite Beer Deluxe, at 10.30
Ian Spence will speak about his water-skiing photography experience and be available to answer any questions.
We then head down to the river.
Lunch is at 12.30 or 1 pm at Beer DeLuxe in the Federation Square. We have booked the same tables as usual in the atrium area of the pub.
Thank you, Ian Spence, for suggesting the outing and planning the activity.
All Melbourne and Camberwell Camera Club members and friends of the group are welcome.

Mid-Week Outing – Tuesday, 17th March – 3rd Tuesday – Southwest CBD Laneways
One feature of central Melbourne that gives the city its personality are its alleyways and byways. This excursion will take us to the more motley end of the City, its south-western corner, to explore and photograph what we spot in those laneways.
As well as that, we will explore the interesting photographic angles to be shot under the elevated section of the train line between Flinders St. and Southern Cross stations. Also, views along the banks of the Yarra River.
An excursion with a difference.
Time and Place: We will meet at the Williams Café and Bar, at the corner of Flinders and William Sts. at 10.30am.
After the end of our photographic jaunt, we plan to return to the Williams Café and Bar for lunch at 12.30pm. Note: It closes at 2pm.
Hope to see many of our Camberwell CC colleagues, as well as our Melbourne CC friends there.

After completing our photographic walk around the Burnley Gardens, we will return to The Common Café & Bar for lunch at 12.30pm.

Mid-Week Outing – Tuesday 6th January 2026 – Royal Botanical Gardens, Melbourne
Our first Mid-Week Outing for 2026 will be to Melbourne’s beautiful and shady Royal Botanical Gardens in Birdwood Avenue.
We will meet in at the Observatory Kiosk, 100 Birdwood Drive, Melbourne – just opposite the Shrine at 10.30 am for tea/coffee.
We will then have a leisurely time exploring and photographing in the gardens before gathering for a picnic lunch under one of the lovely, big, shady trees.
You can plan your explorations using this interactive map or pdf map.
Why the picnic? There are complications booking lunch for a group at the café. Take-away is available from the Terrace Café or the Observatory Kiosk, however, last year the queues were quite long and with limited options. So, our suggestion is to consider bringing a sandwich etc. from home.
All Melbourne and Camberwell Camera Club members, and friends are very welcome.
A big thankyou to Anne S for arranging our January outings.
For further information about this outing or the Mid-Week Outings Group please contact Jim W via midweekgroup@melbournecameraclub.org.au
Note: This is not a guided tour. You can leave the outing at any stage without notifying the organisers.
Mid-Week Outing – Tuesday 20th January 2026 – NGV Exhibition
The NGV Exhibition – Women Photographers 1900-1975 – A Legacy of Light
For our second outing in January, we plan to go to the Women Photographers exhibition at the NGV, 180 St Kilda Road.
It occupies the exhibition space on the ground floor of the St. Kilda Road building.
It is a ticketed event, so we highly recommend that you book a ticket (see update note above) for 11.00am.
Women Photographers 1900–1975: A Legacy of Light celebrates the wide-ranging photographic practices of more than eighty women artists working between 1900 and 1975. Featuring prints, postcards, photobooks and magazines, the exhibition explores the role of photographers as image-makers, and the ways in which women artists create an image of themselves, of others, of the times – from images of the women’s suffrage movement at the turn of the twentieth century, through to the women’s liberation movement and beyond. From Melbourne to Tokyo, Paris to Buenos Aires, the exhibition showcases the works of trailblazing artists such as Berenice Abbott, Lola Álvarez Bravo, Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore, Imogen Cunningham, Mikki Ferrill, Sue Ford, Christine Godden, Ponch Hawkes, Annemarie Heinrich, Ruth Hollick, Florence Henri, Kati Horna, Germaine Krull, Tina Modotti, Lucia Moholy, Toyoko Tokiwa, Yamazawa Eiko and many more.
Time and place: we plan to meet at 10.30am in the Gallery Kitchen (cafeteria), on the ground floor behind the information counter on the left at the NGV International.
After viewing the exhibition we’ll head back over the river to Beer DeLuxe in Federation Square for lunch at about 12.30 pm.
Please come. As always, all Melbourne and Camberwell Camera Club members, and friends are very welcome.
Thank-you to Anne S for arranging our January outings.

Mid-Week Outing – Tuesday 3rd February 2026 – 1st Tuesday – Metro Tunnel
Travelling the Metro Tunnel
We could not do it in 2025, so now let’s see what Melbourne’s new Metro rail tunnel looks like.
We will meet for tea/coffee at the food court in Melbourne Central. The easiest way to get there is, from the southwest corner of Swanston and Latrobe Streets, take the escalator up one flight and walk straight ahead to the food court.
At about 11am, we will proceed to the State Library Metro Station where we will get the train to Arden. After a look around the Arden Station and a photo or two of the architecture of the station from the outside we will get the train back to Parkville Metro Station. This is possibly the most interesting of all the stations. We will then travel down to the Anzac Metro Station and finally return to the Town Hall Metro station, and lunch at 12.30pm at Beer DeLuxe, in Federation Square. Beer DeLuxe has several areas on two levels. We will have lunch in the Atrium area of Beer DeLuxe.
There will be opportunities for architectural photography at all stops, as well as a chance to see and travel the new Metro Tunnel.
Please remember, have your MYKI card with you and charged up, and if you pass out the barrier at any particular station and return back within 15 mins., there is no extra fee. You just resume your journey. The maximum daily cap is $11.40 for full fare and $5.70 for concession.
As always, all Melbourne and Camberwell Camera Club members, and friends are very welcome.
For further information about this outing or the Mid-Week Outings Group please contact Jim W via midweekgroup@melbournecameraclub.org.au

Mid-Week Outing – Tuesday, 17th February – 3rd Tuesday – Immigration Museum
We will start this year’s program of Camberwell CC excursions by going to one of Melbourne’s most historic buildings: The Old Customs House.
It is now the site of the Immigration Museum on the corner on Flinders & Market Streets in the City.
This museum has a very interesting permanent exhibition on the history of migration in Australia. Also, at this time there are special exhibitions on the incredible range of ethnic restaurants and their chefs in Melbourne, as well as stories about the working experience of migrants and refugees who have come and made a new life for themselves in Melbourne and Victoria. This excursion promises to be particularly interesting.
There is an entrance fee of $15,- ($12,-for seniors). It covers both permanent and temporary exhibitions.
Place and Time: We plan to meet at 10.30am at the Williams Bar and Café, on the corner of Flinders and Williams Streets. This is only about a hundred metres from the entrance to the Museum.
After we have finished at the Museum, we plan to return to the Williams Bar & Café for lunch at 12.30pm. Note: It closes at 2pm.
All Camberwell members most welcome, as are our friends from Melbourne CC.
Joe H
