Weekly News #03 11February2024 – Melbourne Camera Club

Our special event on Ludovico W Hart (c1836-1919) founder of MCC, last Thursday 8 February, was attended by MCC members with about half dozen members purchasing the book – The Complete Photographer, A Biography by Alan Elliott. The highlights of evening were speeches by Associate Professor Gail Spring and Robbin Williams which was recorded back in 2013 at the launch of this book.

Thank you to Des Crossley who curated an exhibition of Ludovico Hart’s prints from our Archives. Many thanks to Colin Booth for also organising Ludovico Hart’s enlarger to be displayed in the front of the room, and will continue to be available for all to view in the museum collection at the top of the stairs.

The meeting also culminated with a slideshow of the renovation of our club building in the 1970s, and an interview with Ian Bock. Ian also shared a presentation on why he enters competitions.

MCC Workshop: Body Sculpting and Rear Curtain Sync Workshop with Julie Powell

In the first segment, delve into the art of body sculpting. Explore the interplay of light and shadows to capture intricate forms, focusing on creative lighting techniques and the artful sculpting of the human body. Transition to the second part, where you’ll explore Rear Curtain sync with studio flash.

MCC Workshop: The Art of Still Life with Julie Powell

Learn the art of creating & capturing beautiful still life images. Julie will show you how slowing down will enable you too create beautifully simple still life images, with a combination of constant controlled studio lights as well as soft natural light and creatively placing and staging objects to create a myriad of beautiful serene art.

Call out to Women Photographers

MCC is celebrating 2024 International Women’s Day by curating our 6th exhibition of photography from female photographers, to be on display 8–10 March in our clubrooms.

We are excited about the opportunity to bring together women in photography and explore our theme ‘The Female Gaze’. We encourage and invite all women photographers from the Club to exhibit your images alongside photographers from outside the club. If you are unsure about printing or matting your images, please get in touch and we can help.

Interclub Nature Competition

Camberwell Camera Club is again coordinating the Interclub Nature Competition, previously known as The Glennie, for participating Australian clubs.

We would like to invite you to enter your best nature photos for consideration as part of the MCC club entry.

There are seven categories:

Landscape/Seascape
Botany
Birds
Mammals
Invertebrates
Other Nature
Urban Wildlife

Please read the definitions under Terms & Conditions carefully before submitting your images.

Entries can be uploaded via the Club Competitions page on the MCC website – upload link.

Cut off for submission is midnight on 3 March 2024

Only one image will be selected per MCC member for judging and a maximum of ten images for the club.

The judge will be Georgina Steytler – an outstanding nature photographer and author based in Western Australia.

Awards night will take place on Monday 13 May by Zoom – details to follow.

Club Competitions

The Competition program (Print and PDI) will be pushed back a month and will commence in March. There will be no competitions held in February.

The Set Subjects will remain the same, with Landscape (Landscape, Seascape, Urbanscape) now being the Set Subject for March. The upload deadline will be midnight Wednesday 13 March.

Photo Discussion Group

Monday 12 February, 8pm

The Photo Discussion Group provides a regular forum where you can discuss your passion for photography with like-minded people.

In a friendly, helpful environment, we explore a diverse range of photography topics – what makes competition winning images, creative techniques, how do judges evaluate our work, what tools we use to create the images we love, and how we may progress our skills to a higher level – to name a few.

Whatever your interests – photographic genres, image capture, image processing, printing, EDI, the latest tools, or just looking for tips – you will not be disappointed.
