Weekly News #32 01September2024 – Melbourne Camera Club

It was a full house on Thursday night at the clubrooms, with nearly 100 members, guests and visitors attending at the Analogue Photography Group Exhibition Opening Event.

Kate Baker an Australian fine art photographer was the invited speaker who opened the exhibition. Kate studied at the Australian Centre of Photography, with further studies under master printers Gordon Undy, Michael A Smith & Paula Chamlee. Since 2005 Kate has exhibited in galleries in Australia and Europe. Her work is held in collections in Australia, the US and Europe. Kate has gallery representation in Berlin.

Congratulations to the organisers and exhibitors on a fabulous collection of handmade images. If you haven’t seen the exhibition yet, it is open for a final weekend 7-8 September 11am-3pm.

End of Year Competition

Information about the MCC end of year competition is now available on the website. For information and rules, including new rules on AI, login then go to Members / Club Competitions / End of Year Competitions or follow this link.

The entry portal for the EOY competition will be available via the entry portal soon.

Digital images of all entries (Print and PDI) to be submitted to the entry portal by Wednesday 30th October.
Print entries to be submitted to the club 7-8pm Thursday 31st October (or by arrangement before that date).

Vale Barbara Butler

Barbara Butler, who preferred to be called Barb, died on Wednesday 28th August 2024 a week after her 80th birthday.

Barb was a member of Melbourne Camera Club for many years and contributed her experience and wisdom to the Audio Visual Group during that time. Barb suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and those stairs finally stopped her activity at the club. Her recent years had been ones of increasing pain and immobilisation.

She was an internationally awarded AV maker and continued organising international competition judging with a group of friends until last year.

Barb was a warm, caring person and was much loved by those of us who knew her. We remember her generosity and sense of humour; there was always a smile.

AGM & Nominations for MCC Board Positions

Annual General Meeting – Thursday 3 October 2024

This year’s MCC AGM will be held as a Hybrid Meeting – in person at the Clubrooms and on Zoom. Further details and formal notification will be distributed to eligible MCC Members in due course.

Nominations are now open for MCC Board positions, and must be on the prescribed forms published on the MCC website. Nominations close 10pm Thursday 19 September 2024.

MCC Lightroom Course – Enrolments Open

Our next Introduction to Lightroom Basics course will held on Saturday 5 October, from 8.15am-4.30pm in the Gallery at the Clubrooms.

If you have been thinking about starting out with Lightroom Classic, this is the perfect hands-on introduction course.

Bring your own laptop: this is a one day workshop where participants follow along with an instructor using Lightroom on their laptop.

The workshop is limited to 20 participants.

Workshop Fees:

$89 for MCC members
$149 for non-members
Includes coffee, tea and refreshments for morning and afternoon breaks
BYO lunch

What’s On

Portrait Group

Monday 2 September, 7:00pm

Time: Come at 7:00pm to help with set up, start shooting at 8:00pm

Cost: $10 to get a Shooters Licence – please bring a $10 note!

Remember that attendees are required to upload photos from the shoot for the models. Refer to details at this link

Portrait Group is suitable for photographers of all abilities and experience levels – you just need a modern digital camera that has a hot shoe on the top. The Portrait Group coordinators are willing to give you as much or as little help as you need, whether it be understanding studio flash lighting, how to best frame your shot or how to direct a model, as examples. Just ask.

Mid-Week Outing

Tuesday 3 September, 10:30am – 2pm

Our first outing for September will be to two historic buildings in the Melbourne CBD.

We meet for coffee at 10:30am at Cafe Rustica, corner Queen St and Lt Collins St Melbourne.

After coffee we’ll visit the ANZ Banking Museum at 388 Collins Street. After the ANZ Banking Museum, we’ll head to 333 Collins St. The building was completed in 1990 but retains aspects of the original building completed in the 1890’s. The original building was the home of the Commercial Bank of Australia.

We’ll have lunch at 12:30pm at Dr Watson’s Bar at 417 Collins St.

Guest Speaker: Brian Martin – NGV

Thursday 5 September, 8:00pm

Our very special guest speaker this week is Brian Martin OA, a fascinating man with a story you will not want to miss.

Brian will be highlighting some of the sensational “backstories” he tells on the tours at the NGV including his time at “The Age” darkroom bar and the cloning of a herd of cows in the Yarra Vally that lead to a digital imaging policy that was endorsed by the Fairfax Publishing Group.

In person attendance at the Clubrooms is encouraged so attendees can meet with Brian Martin in person.

Lighting Group

Friday 6 September, 7:30pm

The Lighting group will be meeting on Friday night, and we will explore lighting using multiple lights, this will include how to use the Club’s Studio Lights for this workshop.
