Weekly News #13 21April2024 – Melbourne Camera Club

We had a great presentation from four of our own Analogue Photography Group (APG) members last Thursday with about 40 people attending via zoom and in person at the club.

It was an interesting evening with Selby Markham, Greg Branson, Peter Tredrea and Barrie Bunning showcasing some of their past and current projects.

VAPS Convention 2024

Background on VAPS for newer members:

Victorian Association of Photographic Societies Inc (VAPS), an organisation comprising about 70 photography clubs and 3400 members throughout metropolitan and country Victoria.
VAPS is proud to host a yearly convention and provide camera club members throughout Victoria the opportunity to hear professional photographers speak on a wide range of topics and to also attend outings and workshops to advance their photography skills.

With Easter over and the School Holidays behind us, it is a good time to Register for this year’s Convention which is being held in Berwick, 14-16 June 2024.

Ticket pricing: Full Registration $205, Daily $85.00, Awards Dinner only $68.00

Federation University, Berwick is an excellent venue for this year’s Convention and while Berwick might be seen as part of the ever-expanding Metro area there are many local attractions, including the Wilson Botanic Park at Berwick and of course the Australian Botanic Gardens at Cranbourne (only 20 minutes drive from Berwick) where a Morning Tea is in the Program for the Monday Morning.

The Cocktail Party on Friday night is a good time to catch up those fellow photographers you may not have seen since last year’s Convention at Colac and socially mingle with some of the presenters.

Entries for the Interclub Competition closed near the end of March with 47 clubs submitting entries, including MCC.

Upcoming Digital Exhibition: Your Invitation to Exhibit – Open to all members!

The exhibition deadline has been extended for another week, entries will now close on Sunday 28 April at midnight.

Discover the essence of Melbourne’s vibrant café culture through the lens of the Melbourne Camera Club (MCC) in our exclusive online exhibition, “So Latte”

Immerse yourself in a curated collection that captures the soul of coffee in our city – from the intimate moments of people savoring their coffee, to the intricate processes in roast houses, and the unique ambiances of local cafés. Each photograph tells a story, inviting viewers to explore the rich tapestry of connections, flavors, and traditions that coffee brings to our lives. Experience the warmth, aroma, and beauty of Melbourne’s café scene from wherever you are.

We encourage and invite all MCC members to participate in this upcoming online exhibition, celebrating Melbourne’s coffee culture by making photographic stories based around the enjoyment of coffee (or tea).

APS Australian Cup

MCC will be entering a club entry in the annual APS Australian Cup.

Please submit your entries as early as possible – there were some great images in last years Monthly and End of Year competitions, which would be suitable for this exhibition.

The theme this year is THIS IS AUSTRALIA

Two images per member can be submitted with the following specifications:

1920px by 1200px and up to 2MB
Images can be uploaded until Sunday 19 May
Entries through the Club Competitions page

Any image that shows a flavour of life in Australia including landscapes, people, events and places including architecture, birds and animals.

Images may be taken in any of Australias territories.
Entries must be a single image as captured by the camera.
Images must not be ‘composite images’ that combine subjects or elements from different scenes – replacing a background or sky, for example.

Nature Outing

Sunday 28 April, 10am

For our next outing we are heading to The Basin. With the cooler weather, we hope to find some birds and, depending on the weather, maybe some fungi.

We will meet at the Wicks Nature Reserve Playground situated between Wicks Rd and Basin-Olinda Rd. Turn off Basin-Olinda Rd at coordinates -37.856107, 145.32114. There are toilets in the park.

Please bring good shoes/boots and a plastic sheet or plastic pants if you plan to be kneeling down to photograph fungi. And if staying for lunch, remember food and drink and maybe a spare chair if you have one.

Analogue Photography Group World Pinhole Day

We will be celebrating World Pinhole Day with a Pinhole Workshop at the MCC Clubrooms.

In the workshop we will learn how to build and use a pinhole camera.

VIGEX 2024 International Print Salon

The VIGEX Committee invites all club members to participate in the 2024 International PRINT salon which is now open for entries, closing date 24 June 2024.

VIGEX has been running international salons open to both professional and amateur photographers since 1980. We have been successfully hosting and exhibiting both print and digital photography from around the world.
