Weekly News #11 7April2024 – Melbourne Camera Club

It is a busy week ahead at MCC: Monday evening is the Photo Discussion Group – in a friendly, helpful environment, we explore a diverse range of photography topics – what makes competition winning images, creative techniques, how do judges evaluate our work, what tools we use to create the images we love, and how we may progress our skills to a higher level – to name a few.

Thursday is Print Competition, in person at the Clubrooms, where the judge will be Natasha Cantwell. Please contact the Competition Committee if you have any queries about the upcoming competitions.

Friday night is a Street Architecture Shoot with the Lighting Group around the streets nearby to the Clubrooms.

Saturday and Sunday is the popular Introduction to Darkroom Basics Course for registered participants.

On Saturday there will be two outings: the Analogue Group are holding a Medium Format Shooting Excursion at the Newport Railway Museum. Nearby in Williamstown the Photowalk Community group will be holding a photowalk around the Williamstown foreshore and a visit to Steve McCurry ICONS Exhibition – RSVP required for dinner, please see details below.

Upcoming Digital Exhibition: Your Invitation to Exhibit – Open to all members!

Discover the essence of Melbourne’s vibrant café culture through the lens of the Melbourne Camera Club (MCC) in our exclusive online exhibition, “So Latte”

Immerse yourself in a curated collection that captures the soul of coffee in our city – from the intimate moments of people savoring their coffee, to the intricate processes in roast houses, and the unique ambiances of local cafés. Each photograph tells a story, inviting viewers to explore the rich tapestry of connections, flavors, and traditions that coffee brings to our lives. Experience the warmth, aroma, and beauty of Melbourne’s café scene from wherever you are.

We encourage and invite all MCC members to participate in this upcoming online exhibition, celebrating Melbourne’s coffee culture by making photographic stories based around the enjoyment of coffee.

APS Australian Cup

MCC will be entering a club entry in the annual APS Australian Cup.

The MCC entry portal is now open for submission of your images – on the MCC Club Competitions page.

The theme this year is THIS IS AUSTRALIA

Please submit your entries as early as possible – there were some great images in last years Monthly and End of Year competitions, which would be suitable for this exhibition.

Two images per member can be submitted with the following specifications:

1920px by 1200px and up to 2MB
Images can be uploaded until Sunday 19 May

Battle of the Malverns: The Beacon Camera Club UK versus Melbourne Camera Club AUS

Beacon Camera Club in the UK has invited MCC to compete with them in an interclub competition.

This competition will consist of 30 images from each club and both clubs will engage a judge to independently score the 60 images. We have chosen the images submitted to the VAPS interclub competition as our club submission to this competition.

Ian Rolfe (Grand Master of Photography APS) has agreed to be our independent judge and Aleks Gjika (EFIAP, DPAGB) will score the same set of images for Beacon.

We will hold a Zoom meeting in May to view the winning images.

What’s On

Photo Discussion Group

Monday 8 April, 8pm

The Photo Discussion Group provides a regular forum where you can discuss your passion for photography with like-minded people.

In a friendly, helpful environment, we explore a diverse range of photography topics – what makes competition winning images, creative techniques, how do judges evaluate our work, what tools we use to create the images we love, and how we may progress our skills to a higher level – to name a few.

Whatever your interests – photographic genres, image capture, image processing, printing, EDI, the latest tools, or just looking for tips – you will not be disappointed.

This month’s Set Subject is Nature, and we would like you to comply with the APS Rules for Nature competitions. If you are unsure if your image is suitable, the Competition Committee would be happy to discuss further with you.

APG Medium Format Shooting Excursion

A medium format shooting excursion at the Newport Railway Museum.

Many members have medium format cameras, and the club has a collection of medium format cameras for loan. If you want to try medium format here’s your chance to borrow a camera and get a lot of help from experienced shooters.

Photowalk Community – Williamstown & Steve McCurry ICONS Exhibition

Saturday 13 April, 2.15 for 2.30pm start

For April’s Photowalk outing we are heading to Williamstown.

In addition, we are planning to visit the Steve McCurry ICONS Photography Exhibition. Buy your ticket in advance for the 4.00pm session on Saturday 13 April and bring your mobile device headphones to hear audio commentary.

We will meet at 2.15pm at the ‘The Cannons’ next to Ferguson St Pier at the Corner of The Strand, Nelson Place, Ferguson St, Williamstown.

Afterwards, we will adjourn for drinks / dinner at a local pub (optional) – dinner RSVP required before 9am, 11 April to: photowalks@melbournecameraclub.org.au

VIGEX 2024 International Print Salon

The VIGEX Committee invites all club members to participate in the 2024 International PRINT salon which is now open for entries, closing date 24 June 2024.

VIGEX has been running international salons open to both professional and amateur photographers since 1980. We have been successfully hosting and exhibiting both print and digital photography from around the world.
