Vale Ian Henry Bock OAM

Our esteemed Life Member Ian Henry Bock died peacefully on Thursday, 19 February 2026 after suffering a stroke. He was 92.

Ian had been a dedicated member of the Melbourne Camera Club for 60 years. In addition to being a Life Member, he served for many years on the Board, including terms as President and Treasurer. He was closely involved in the purchase and renovation of the Dorcas Street premises, which we all enjoy today.

Ian’s contributions to photography and the wider community were widely recognised, earning him honours, such as, the OAM (2014), the APS award for State Service to Photography in 1991 (SSAPS) and the Victorian Association of Photographic Societies Service award (SSVAPS) for his service the creative arts and to camera clubs and other not-for-profit organisations.

Across more than 7 decades, Ian judged, created, and exhibited wonderfully imaginative photographic work. In 2023, to celebrate his 90th birthday, he held a retrospective of his photography with photographs covering his whole photographic period from box brownie to the digital era.

His love of photographic history was showcased in a display of darkroom equipment and vintage cameras.  Ian sought joy in image-making and encouraged it in others, establishing ‘The Bockey’ award for MCC photographers who showed a spirit of play and fun in their work.

Ian will be deeply missed for his wisdom, photographic insight, camaraderie and rich knowledge of the Club’s history.

We extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends.
