Competition Committee News

It was great to see some very good images in the Image Critique section of the PDI competition on Thursday. If you would like feedback on images without the competitive aspect, don’t forget this section is available for constructive comments by the judge on both print and PDI competition nights. You can enter PDI images to this section via the PDI entry portal; prints can be brought in on the print competition night. Critiqued images can also be entered in a competition at a later date using judge’s comments on improvements.

Competition Rules

This month we are reminding entrants that:

Entrants may not enter the same or a substantially similar image in both the Print and PDI competitions in the same month.
Entrants may not enter the same or a substantially similar image in a monthly competition if it has previously received an Award in a monthly competition; or in an End of Year Competition.
All the rules for the monthly competitions are on the website.

PORTRAITURE EXPERT PRESENTATION – 7.30pm Tuesday 27 April Zoom

As part of the preparation for this year’s 10 Club Portrait Competition that we participate in, Alan Moyle, one of the expert judges, has very kindly agreed to present to all the participating clubs on the Art and Skills of Portraiture. This session arranged and hosted by the Camberwell Camera Club will be extremely useful, particularly as we all start to think about which of our portrait images we will be submitting for consideration for inclusion in our club’s entry into this major competition.

Lightroom Workshop Helpers Wanted

MCC is again running the Lightroom workshop and is seeking members with Lightroom (LR) and PC/Mac experience to help on the day (15 May 2021).

AIPP Silver Lining Awards

Congratulations to MCC Member Ruth Woodrow for achieving Second Place in the Colour category of the AIPP Silver Lining Awards last night! This is a significant national and international competition attracting in excess of 7000 images from more than 700 professional photographers through to keen amateurs worldwide.

Nature Photography Exhibition – Opening 20 May 2021

The Melbourne Camera Club is pleased to be holding its second nature photography exhibition next month on 20, 22, 23, 29 and 30 May this year. The exhibition will showcase the best of our members’ nature work along with works from some special invited guests. Emerald Hill Reimagined – Then and Now

As part of the Melbourne Camera Club’s 130th Anniversary, and coinciding with Open House Melbourne, we are putting on an exhibition entitled “Emerald Hill Reimagined – Then and Now”. The idea behind the exhibition is that 30+ photographers from the club will select an photograph from the City of Port Phillip collection dating from approximately 1890 and will “reimagine” that image – whether that be a simple reshoot, a reinterpretation or even an abstract inspired by the original photograph. The exhibition will consist of pairs of photographs – the original and the reimagined image displayed side-by-side. I am calling for early expressions of interest in being part of this historic event. Please email paul.dodd@melbournecameraclub.org.au if you are interested in participating.

Please Share your Accomplishments

Many of our MCC photographers participate in competitions, salons and exhibitions – both locally in Australia and internationally. It would be great if we could share member’s successes and accomplishments with the broader club community – so if you have participated and succeeded or achieved something of note photographically then please let us know – send details to paul.dodd@melbournecameraclub.org.au so that we can spread the word! Sharing accomplishments can be truly inspiring to others. I am also looking at putting together a directory of competitions, salons and exhibitions so that people can participate if they would like – if you know of any competitions, salons or exhibitions, please send details to me for inclusion in the directory.

Review – Guest Speaker Joshua Holko

Joshua Holko is an internationally acclaimed polar and sub-polar fine art photographer. He has won numerous awards and been featured in publications including National Geographic. On Thursday 15 April he presented at the MCC and live-streamed to VAPS affiliated camera club audiences across Victoria. His talk was entitled: “Antarctica – The Great White Continent”.

Review – Guest Speaker Forough Yavari

Forough Yavani was a recent guest speaker at MCC. Forough is an award-winning portrait and fine art photographer based in Brisbane. She took us on a journey outlining her early years and the events that have shaped her approach to Storytelling Portraiture. M-Squared Collaboration

‘M Squared’ is the first collaboration between Malahide Camera Club (Ireland) and Melbourne Camera Club. MCC members are invited to submit images to illustrate our respective city’s uniqueness, eg there are no skyscrapers in Dublin and they are plentiful in Melbourne. The Showcase Event will be held on Sunday 16 May 7pm Melbourne time, via Zoom.
