Weekly News#19 02 June 2024 – Melbourne Camera Club

The Smartphone Workshop held at the Clubrooms on Saturday afternoon attracted a strong turnout, with 39 participants enjoying an afternoon dedicated to phone photography. Mike James led the session, covering the basics of phone camera apps and editing techniques using LR Mobile and Snapseed. The participants gave excellent feedback. Mike provided a workbook to attendees, and also donated a copy of his book ‘Stronger Photo Composition – 4 Step System’ to MCC.

Call Out to All Nature Photographers – Entries Close Next Sunday!

The MCC is pleased to announce that it will be holding its fifth nature exhibition in June this year. The theme for this year’s exhibition is ‘All Creatures Great and Small‘ and there will be both a ‘true nature’ section, and a ‘creative nature’ section.

Print drop off: 13 June
Opening event: 20 June
Exhibition dates: 21-23 June

Portrait Group

Monday 3 June, 7:00pm

Monthly meeting of the Portrait Group – first Monday of each month. An excellent chance to practice portrait photography skills, learn about studio lighting and grow your portfolio.

Open to all MCC members (and visitors may attend up to 2 sessions).

If you want to shoot, please bring:

your camera (with a standard hot shoe on top for the flash trigger)
$10 for a shooters licence.

Mid-Week Outing: University of Melbourne

Tuesday 4 June, 10:30am

Our outing for Tuesday 4th June will be to the University of Melbourne which offers many opportunities to photograph great subjects and perhaps some photo-journalism images on the South Lawn!

We will meet for coffee/tea at the Dr Dax Kitchen, 30 Royal Parade, Parkville, directly opposite the Royal Melbourne Hospital car park entrance, at 10.30 am.

Lunch will be at the Prince Alfred Hotel, 191 Grattan St., (between Roal Parade and Swanston St,) from 12.15 pm.

What’s On Outside MCC

Lens + Form Exhibition: 2D and 3D Photographs by Richard Tandler

The Quadrant Gallery will be running an exhibition of historical photographs by the late Richard Tandler taken in Austria from the 1920’s until his family departed Austria in November 1938. It will include photographs taken on a 3D camera with the images produced on stereoscopic large format glass slides.

Exhibition dates: 5 – 28 June
Exhibition opening: Thurs 6 June 6-8pm

Bowness Photography Prize 2024: Callout for entries

Calling artists who work with photography! The Museum of Australian Photography (MAPh) welcomes submissions from artists at all stages of their career to enter one the richest photography prizes in Australia.

The winning work will receive $30 000 and be acquired into MAPh’s significant collection; the $10 000 Wai Tang Commissioning Award includes an exhibition in the next Bowness Photography Prize season; the Camera House People’s Choice Award is valued at $5000 (50-50 cash and in-kind).

Entries close 13 June 2024.
