Tue Feb 7 – Williamstown Ferry Trip

Melbourne Camera Club & Camberwell Camera Club

Our first Mid-Week Outing for 2023 will be a Ferry trip from Southbank to Williamstown and return.

And that will be on the first Tuesday of the month – 7th February.

The ferry leaves Southbank at 10.30am.   Please be early so that you can be sure of getting a ticket (in summer they sell out).  Maybe get there early, get your ticket, and then buy a coffee before you depart, but don’t miss the boat. They do have free coffee or tea on the ferry, but that may not suit everyone.

The trip to Williamstown takes up to one hour. The plan would then be to look around and have lunch at the Customs House Hotel at 12.30 before returning to Southbank on the 2.30pm ferry. They also run at 1.30 & 3.30. The cost – seniors concession round trip $38.

The ferry departs from Southgate, Berth 2, Lower Promenade, opposite side of the Yarra River from Flinders Street Station.

At Williamstown it is only a short walk from Gem Pier to the shops and hotel.

Camberwell C.C. members always very welcome.

After our walk, we will meet again for lunch at 12.30 at The Terrace near the lake in the north east of the Botanic Gardens.

We look forward to seeing many of you from both the Camberwell and the Melbourne Club at this our second excursion of the year.

Tue Mar 21 – MAPh – 100 Faces

Camberwell Camera Club & Melbourne Camera Club

The Tue 21 March excursion will be to the Museum of Australian Photography.

As this Gallery specializes in mounting photographic exhibitions, we have been regular visitors there.

This time the exhibition on display there is called ‘100 Faces’. Through the lenses of over fifty artists the exhibition brings together images from two private Melbourne collections, belonging to the Harris & Rosenthal families. The photographs cover a vast timespan from the 1860s to the present day. Their subject matter ranges from the formal portrait to candid street photography.

It promises to be an amazing display.

We will meet at 10.30am in the café of the Wheelers Hill Hotel, cnr. of Ferntree Gully Rd and Jells Rd (Melway 71 J9). The café opens directly off the car park off Jells Road at the rear of the pub. After coffee we just walk across Ferntree Gully Road to the MAPh.

After viewing the exhibition we will have lunch at 12.30pm at the Wheeler Hills Hotel.

Hope to see many of you there, and of course our Melbourne friends are cordially invited to join us.

Camberwell Camera Club & Melbourne Camera Club

This month we will run an ‘in-house excursion.’

It is to the ‘Light Years’ exhibition organized by our Camberwell Camera Club.

The exhibits are the result of the members 2022 photo essay project. These are part of the Club’s 70th anniversary celebrations and are now on public display at the Boroondara Arts Centre (the old Hawthorn Town Hall building), corner of Burwood and Glenferrie Roads, Hawthorn.

Time and place:  Dr. Brunch Café on Burwood Road, adjacent to the Boroondara Arts Centre, at 10.30am.

We then plan to walk across to view the exhibition.

After which a saunter up the interesting and eclectic shopping strip of Glenferrie Road is recommended. An opportunity to take some photos for our photo album.

We will then reassemble for lunch at 12.30pm in the Glenferrie Hotel (Burwood Road, just west of the Glenferrie Road intersection).

Hope many of our Camberwell members will come and help celebrate the occasion, and of course our Melbourne CC friends are most welcome.

Pentridge, Coburg – Aug 15, 2023

This time we plan to visit a place I for one have been meaning to visit for a long time: Pentridge.

What I have read about the conversion of Pentridge Goal to a tourist site, shopping centre and housing development has intrigued me. I just couldn’t imagine it. Now is the chance to see and photograph this unique place.

Place and time: We plan to meet at the Coburg Drums Hotel at10.30am. The hotel is on the corner of Sydney Road and O’Hea St.

There is a toll-free car park at its rear. The Hotel is opposite the main entrance to the Pentridge site.

After our time in Pentridge we will reassemble for lunch back at the Coburg Drums Hotel.
For those not doing the tour, lunch will be at 12.30pm.

If you plan to come by public transport: catch the Upfield train at Flinders St Station, disembarking at Coburg; or, catch the no. 19 tram on Elizabeth St, disembarking at stop 35 (St Pauls Catholic Church / Sydney Rd Stop) near Sydney Rd & O’Hea St intersection.

As always, our Melbourne CC friends are most welcome to join us.

Melbourne Sea Life Aquarium – Sep 5, 2023

Mid-Week Outing – Tuesday 5th September

Our Mid-Week Outing for the 1st Tuesday in September will be to the Melbourne SEALIFE Aquarium, on the corner of Flinders and King Streets, Melbourne.

It is within walking distance from Southern Cross and Flinders Street stations.

Also trams 70, 75 & city circle, and buses 35, 70 and 75.

The entrance fee for seniors is $28.80, otherwise the adult fee is $37.60. Payment by card only.

Photography is welcome, but no flash.  And please note that the sharks and rays are off display, as the Oceanarium display is undergoing a major renovation.

We will meet at 10.30 am in the SEA LIFE café within the aquarium – you need to pay and enter the aquarium to access the café.

Lunch will be at the Yarra Botanica – head east along the Yarra, cross over to the south side at Queensbridge Street.

The restaurant is moored between the old Sandridge Rail Bridge and the coat hanger bridge (apparently called the Evan Walker bridge).

Why this choice? There are no suitable eating places nearby north of the river, and over the river it’s the Casino eateries with inflated prices.

The Yarra Botanica provides Hot Snacks, Cold Snacks and Sourdough Pizza, at reasonable prices. It carries on the nautical theme started at the aquarium. Payment by card only again, sorry.

Camberwell Camera Club members are very welcome.

St Kilda Botanical Gardens – Sep 19, 2023

Mid-Week Outing – Tuesday 19th September

With Joe Hajdu away, this Mid-Week Outing is arranged by MCC.
New MCC member Sara has assisted Jim W with organising this outing.

We will be going to the St Kilda Botanical Gardens.

We will meet at 10.30 am for the usually coffee at “Lady of St Kilda” 204 Barkly Street, on the corner of Smith Street, and virtually opposite where Acland Street joins Barkly Street.

(Note: Confusingly, Google maps also has a “The Lady of St Kilda” Coffee shop in Ackland St, but street view shows this as a shop called BIBA.)

It’s only a short walk on Blessington Street to the gardens.

And lunch will be at The Village Belle Hotel, 202 Barkly Street. We will be eating in the upstairs space. In Barkley St, enter the new section on the left-hand side as you face the hotel.

The area is well serviced by public transport. The St Kilda route 96 light trail runs past the Melbourne Camera Club building and ends in Acland Street, at Barkly Street.

And there are buses running down Barkly Street, routes 246, 600, & 922.

It’s also only about a 10-minute walk from the tram in St Kilda Road/Brighton Road routes 3a & 16.

For those planning on travelling by car, there is unlimited parking in the four streets surrounding the Gardens, on the gardens side of the street, plus Herbert Street, but parking is very limited, and its luck if you find a space.

There is two-hour parking on the other sides of the street, and usually there are spaces, it may mean moving your car halfway through.

There is also ticket parking in Shakespeare Grove, next to Luna Park.

Jim Weatherill (MCC) & Sara Wigney (MCC)

The Melbourne Camera Club Photo Walk and Mid-Week Outing Groups are combining to go to Werribee Park Mansion on Cup Day.

Werribee Park Mansion is one of the largest and most opulent properties in Victoria. With 60 rooms across several wings, the mansion has been featured as a backdrop in some of Australia’s favourite film productions and television shows including Miss Fisher, Winchester, Neighbours and Queen of the Damned.

In and around the mansion, volunteers dressed in period costumes will be available to be photographed.

The formal gardens are spacious and beautifully maintained and The Victorian State Rose Garden should be special at this time of year.

As Cup Day is a Public Holiday, there will be other visitors at the Mansion and gardens. Please be respectful of these guests while you are photographing.

Also, lunch arrangements are a bit tricky as some venues are either not opening or require an early firm commitment of numbers. Therefore, we will be eating at The Views, Werribee Park Golf Club, 350 K Road, Werribee South, 2 km or 7 minutes further along K Road. Lunch is booked for 12.30 pm. We will require your confirmation of your intention to join us for lunch by Wednesday 1st November.

NGV Ian Potter Centre – 21 Nov 2023

Tuesday, 21 November 2023

We try to discover exhibitions that will be of interest to us as photographers.

This month it is one titled ‘Photography: Real and Imagined.

The chosen images in it compare photography as a record of the real world around us with photography as the product of the imagination. The work of such photographers as Man Ray, Max Dupain, Jeff Wall and Nan Goldin is shown to illustrate these themes.

The exhibition is at the Ian Potter Centre on Level 3 of the NGV Australia, Fed Square.

Meeting time and place:  10.30am at the café in the Atrium on the same side as the shop and entrance to the Ian Potter Centre, NGV, Federation Square.

At 12.30pm, after we have viewed the exhibition, we will adjourn for lunch to the Young and Jackson Hotel, corner of Flinders and Swanston Sts.

As always, our friends from the Melbourne CC are most welcome to join us. Hope to see many of you there.

Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve – 6 Dec 2023

Tuesday 5th December – this will be our final outing for 2023.

We will be visiting the Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve (formerly the Elsternwick Park).

Although not fully developed, it is certainly worth a visit.

The old Elsternwick Golf Course is being transformed into a vibrant nature park. Key elements of the design include a “chain of ponds” (nine completed, one to come) woodlands and wetlands, a “conservation island”, a look-out knoll, bird hides, and outdoor community amenities linked by paths.

The outing has been suggested by Sara Wigney, who has helped with the planning.

Our outing will start at 10.30 am at The Elsternwick Hotel for a coffee or tea: 259 Brighton Rd, corner of Glen Huntly Rd, Elwood.

The Nature Reserve is only a short walk from the Hotel, just over Glen Huntly Road. After exploring and photographing the Reserve we shall return to the hotel for lunch at approx. 12.30 pm.

Getting there is easy:

By rail, on the Sandringham line, from the Elsternwick Railway Station it’s only 5 minutes’ walk to the hotel. Arriving at the station, head west along Glen Huntly Rd and cross Brighton Road, and you’re there.

By tram, the Carnegie tram (no.67) comes down Brighton Road from the city, stop 42 (Hotham St / Brighton Rd Stop) or 43 (Brighton Rd / Glen Huntly Rd Stop)

By car: and for those bringing their cars you can leave them in the hotel car park while attending the outing.

The Hotel is also serviced by 4 different bus routes.

As this is our final outing for the year it would be great to see everyone there.

Camberwell Camera Club members and visitors always very welcome.

Jim Weatherill
