DESCRIPTION:This is the monthly meeting of the Portrait Group – first Monday of each month. An excellent chance to practice portrait photography skills\, learn about studio lighting and grow your portfolio. \nThe meeting is a practical photography session. We use flash lighting in a studio setting. We will have 2 sets operating and 2-3 models\, so there will be ample opportunity to shoot. \nOpen to all MCC members (and visitors may attend up to 2 sessions). \nIf you want to shoot\, please bring: \n\nyour camera (with a standard hot shoe on top for the flash trigger)\n$10 for a shooters licence.\n\nPlease come along at 7pm to help set up. We start shooting at 8pm\, and stop when the models say they’ve had enough (typically 2-3 hours). \nPlease remember that after the shoot you are required to send some photos back for the models. DESCRIPTION:Overview\nPeter Fogarty is a Melbourne and Bass Coast-based photographer whose work spans portraiture\, seascapes\, cityscapes\, astrophotography and wildlife.  Formerly a detective senior sergeant\, he transitioned into photography in 2014\, following a long career in policing. \nStyle & Focus\nPeter’s photographic style emphasises the natural world and ethically-aware practice: \n\n\nHe describes his work under the theme of Eco Photography\, striving to minimise environmental impact while capturing wildlife and landscapes. \n\n\nHe has actively contributed to citizen science projects photographing whales—recognising individual whales by their unique fluke patterns—to support migration and behaviour research. \n\n\nHe runs workshops and shares his expertise in seascape\, cityscape\, and astrophotography\, emphasising both technical skills (exposure\, composition) and creative vision. \n\n\nBackground & Notable Work\n\n\nPeter began photography after leaving policing: “I’m looking for something that was just for me.” \n\n\nHe is based at Cape Woolamai on the Bass Coast\, and his local exploration of the coastline\, animals and skies feeds much of his imagery. \n\n\nHis work with the annual Island Whale Festival on Phillip Island highlights his dual role as photographer and citizen-scientist\, giving talks like “Photographing Whales is No Fluke”.

DESCRIPTION:As the level of understanding of digital editing techniques varies enormously among members\, we will aim to provide information to members at basic\, intermediate and advanced levels in each meeting. \nThe focus is not on how to capture an image\, but on what can be done with it in post-processing after downloading the images to your computer. Topics such as adjusting exposure and saturation\, compositing\, HDR and special effects will be just some of the areas covered. The digital editing techniques discussed will primarily be applicable to Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop\, however these techniques are generally transferable to many other digital editing programs. \nMore detail of the topics to be discussed will be announced in the weeks before the meeting.

DESCRIPTION:Introduction – Jessie Brinkman Evans \nTonight we’re delighted to welcome Jessie Brinkman Evans\, a documentary and editorial photographer based between Melbourne and St John’s in Canada. With roots in Southern California and Australia\, Jessie’s work explores the deep connection between land\, light and culture\, often in some of the world’s most remote and striking environments. \nFor nearly a decade\, she has photographed extensively across the Arctic\, particularly Greenland\, capturing the quiet beauty and resilience of isolated communities. Her recent exhibition Someday at No Vacancy Gallery in Melbourne focused on life in the small Greenlandic town of Niaqornat and was exhibited alongside legendary photographer Steve McCurry at Leica Gallery Melbourne. \nJessie’s work has been commissioned by clients such as Leica\, Condé Nast Traveller\, Visit Greenland and Newfoundland & Labrador Tourism\, and is recognised for its sensitivity to light and its thoughtful storytelling. \nPlease join me in welcoming Jessie Brinkman Evans as she shares her journey and remarkable images with us tonight.

We will have 2 sets operating and 2-3 models\, so there will be ample opportunity to shoot. \nOpen to all MCC members (and visitors may attend up to 2 sessions). \nIf you want to shoot\, please bring: \n\nyour camera (with a standard hot shoe on top for the flash trigger)\n$10 for a shooters licence.\n\nPlease come along at 7pm to help set up. We start shooting at 8pm\, and stop when the models say they’ve had enough (typically 2-3 hours). \nPlease remember that after the shoot you are required to send some photos back for the models. DESCRIPTION:As the level of understanding of digital editing techniques varies enormously among members\, we will aim to provide information to members at basic\, intermediate and advanced levels in each meeting. \nThe focus is not on how to capture an image\, but on what can be done with it in post-processing after downloading the images to your computer. Topics such as adjusting exposure and saturation\, compositing\, HDR and special effects will be just some of the areas covered. The digital editing techniques discussed will primarily be applicable to Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop\, however these techniques are generally transferable to many other digital editing programs. \nMore detail of the topics to be discussed will be announced in the weeks before the meeting.
