President Message
Greetings everyone,

Welcome to a new year and one we hope will see us once again meeting soon at our clubs, being able to socialise more normally and to be able to enjoy all the outings, including the planned convention.

Last year tested as as individuals and as a community to an extent I have not experienced before in my life and I am sure most of us can say the same.

We are fortunate to live in a country that took the epidemic seriously and the results speak for themselves.

Let’s hope the vaccination rollout is positive and further into this year we can almost be back to normal with travel back on the agenda.

Following discussions with Marc and his dedicated team in the Wangaratta Club, we are able to confirm the rescheduling of the Victorian Association of Photographic Societies Annual State Convention and Interclub Photographic Competition to June 2021 as follows:

Thursday 3rd
  • Memorial Hall Set Up
Friday 4th
  • Photographic Competition in Memorial Hall
  • Cocktail Party in Foyer
Saturday 5th
  • Convention – Auditorium, Foyer, Conference Room & Memorial Hall
Sunday 6th
  • Convention – Auditorium, Foyer, Conference Room, Memorial Hall & Council Chambers
The VAPS committee will keep a close watch on developments with regard to Covid and what that means going forward, but keeping a positive attitude, hopefully we can have our convention.

Our team up there in Wangaratta have everything in place and we also have speakers and workshops booked and ready to roll.

We will keep you posted!

My best to all and hopefully this wet cooler summer has seen you all out shooting amazing subjects!

Warm regards

Ian Rolfe
(President VAPS)

VAPS Interclub
In regard to the VAPS 2021 Interclub competition entries and format, VAPS has become aware that many clubs have not or are still not engaging in print competitions for judging given COVID restrictions and concerns.

The situation of uncertainty is accentuated by the fact that the COVID vaccine distribution is yet to commence in Australia and timelines are not yet firmed up.

We are therefore taking this opportunity to provide early advice to clubs that the VAPS Interclub in 2021 will consist of digital entries and Audio Visual only.  There will be 15 entries for digital & A/V respectively.

The submission timetable for the 2021 VAPS Interclub is as follows:

  • January 30 VAPS upload system opens for clubs to commence uploading digital and Audio Visual entries.
  • March 21 Half-Year VAPS-Club Meeting (digital and Audio Visual entries for Interclub close)

Further advice on arrangements for the VAPS Half Year meeting will be advised in due course.

If there are any queries please contact the Secretary, VAPS.

Meritorious Service Award

Mario Mirabile

Mario joined Caulfield Photography Society in 2010 and became the club’s Treasurer and Membership Coordinator in 2012, a position he still holds. His time as Treasurer has seen the club become financially stable, now having a clear and detailed direction to ensure continuity. Mario has fine-tuned the Introduction to Photography Course each year to keep itrelevant since he took over as lead Presenter in 2016. His talent and new ideas has seen the participants of the course continue on as members of the club.

His extraordinary commitment to the club has impressed every person who joins and there is
not one person who feels that they cannot approach him for advice and direction. As the
Interclub Coordinator, he ensures that as many members as possible get to be represented in
exhibitions, as he feels that each member’s work is important. He encourages those who are
novices to participate in competitions so they can improve their photography and he shares
his knowledge willingly.

His passion for photography itself cannot be questioned as he strives to improve constantly,
joining APJA and becoming a judge about five years ago, completing his Masters (MAPS),
as a member of APS and joining the Australian Association of Street Photographers (AASP)
to enhance his passion for street photography.

Mario has presented several workshops to the club including matting for Competition, Macro
Photography, Basic Editing and Flash Photography.

He is a contributor to all club competitions, interclub and nationals. He was also a
contributor to CPS's Australian Cup Silver Medal, 2019.

Mario has been a contributor and finalist in many regional and national competitions as well
as a contributor to several Photography publications.

Some of these are -
  • Australian Conceptual Photography, 2019
  • Tweed Regional Gallery, Olive Cotton, 2019
  • Fipp, 2019
  • Warragul National, 2018
  • Travel Photographer of the Year,2018
  • Herald Sun Photo Competition, Winner, 2018
  • Heritage Bank Awards, 2017
  • Australian Photography, Photographer of the year, Black and White, Commended,2015.

Meritorious Service Award

Phil Ryan

Phil joined Doncaster Camera Club in 2007 and has been an active member for 13 year. He
has served on the Club committee from 2010 - 2019. He was Vice President from 2013 - 2016.

Phil is an active photographer and regularly attends and helps coordinate Club outings. He
does his own printing and regularly enters competitions at his own club, Inter club and VAPS
Conventions.

The Doncaster Camera Club Audio-visual Special Interest Group was set up by Phil in 2012 and he continues to run it. The success of this group, which meets regularly and produces quality AVs, is largely due to Phil’s enthusiasm, encouragement and mentoring of both new and old members. He is always generous with his time and assistance, as required, with photography, software programs and technical issues. He has given Audio visual presentations at other clubs. Audio Visuals are a major part of Phil’s photography and he has won numerous awards at both VAPS and National AV Competitions.

Phil set up the Doncaster Camera Club Website in 2012 and has maintained it since. It is an
impressive and professional website and has attracted many new members in the past 9 years.
The Website is always up to date and provides important and necessary information to all
Club members.

Phil firstly participated in, and subsequently took over, the redesign and management of APS
Audio Visual online Folio in 2014. He put in a considerable amount of work to build up this
Folio and run it as a successful and inter-active APS group.

Phil is an active participant in other DCC Special Interest Groups - currently the Scenic
Group and the Monochrome Group and previously the Themes and Series Group.
Phil designs and prints all the Special certificates and awards required by DCC.

Phil is always available at Club Meetings to make sure the computer and projector run
smoothly. If any glitches occur he steps in unasked and without fuss to help get the meeting
back on track.

Meritorious Service Award

Valerie Armstrong

Val Armstrong joined Doncaster Camera Club in 1995 and has been a keen and active
photographer with the club for all that time. She has regularly attended many Club outings
and VAPS Conventions.

She exhibits her photos as prints and digital images every month and has done so for 25
years, originally as slides. Her name features on nearly all DCC Annual trophies many times
over, but most recently Open Print of the Year 2017.

Val served on the committee for 14 years from 2001 - 2014. She was President for six years
from 2007 to 2013. During her time as President the club ran smoothly and membership
increased. Val was responsible for organising many club outings and weekends away. She
has organized portrait shoots and arranged models as necessary.

As president Val organised many inter-club photography competitions and ensured that
Doncaster was well represented. She also arranged photo selection and delivery.

Over the years Val has entered many National and International Competitions and has had
considerable success. She has been awarded with LAPS in 2008, AAPS in 2009 and AFIAP
in 2011. Val also encouraged and assisted members in entering national and international
competitions.

Val supported the Manningham Council's Community calendar and has had a photo selected
and used in the Calendar.

She has been active member of the DCC Special Interest Group – Themes and Series - since
it commenced in 2012.

She continues to be a valuable contributor at club meetings. She regularly mans the front desk
and greets members and visitors and makes sure everyone feels very welcome.

Val participates in Doncaster Camera Club's internal judging panel for club competitions.
This involves judging images entered by members and presenting the results at club
meetings. She has regularly participated in judging panels and presented judging reports at
other Victorian camera clubs.

She undertook a project to photograph dogs walking at Mullum Mullum Trail where she
walks regularly. She has an impressive collection of dog photos and has presented the owners
with prints of the dogs.

Val has worked tirelessly and enthusiastically for Doncaster Camera Club. As President she
worked hard to ensure DCC always had judges and presenters and ran smoothly. A VAPS
Meritorious award is a fitting recognition of 25 years of active service to her club.

 Judging Information

Judges Honorarium

Judges - Travel Expenses/Honorarium
It is expected that Victorian Judges and Presenters will be compensated for expenses when visiting clubs. Judges and presenters give their time and energies for free, some very generously, many times each month. The least we can do is to ensure that they are not out of pocket.

Remote judging honorarium
Although judges are not out of pocket for undertaking remote judging they often undertake a considerable amount of work over and above that when attending a club. Judges either prepare detailed audio recordings or written notes to allow the club to adequately present the judging comments. Therefore an amount of $50 would not be unreasonable. The judge should discuss this with the club prior to accepting the work.

Considered being a Judge?

Clubs are asked to encourage members to consider being a photography judge. There are many benefits of being a judge. These include:

  • Exposure to a wide array of photographic work which contributes to one’s self development in photographic artistry
  • Greater confidence and experience in communication of the principles of photography
  • Receiving structured training in photographic judging including aesthetics, technical competency, photography and the law and many other aspects of photography
  • Helping others develop their skills and capabilities in the art of photography
  • Opportunities to participate in interclub and other photographic judging arenas

There are currently only 34 metropolitan members on the Victorian judges list and 18 in the country. We currently have 70 clubs and if every club has 10 competitions a year we would need all 52 judges to judge about 14 competitions a year.

That is too much of a load for any judge.  Many are only prepared to about 10 per year which means that we have a large shortage of judges.

VAPS therefore welcomes suggestions on how to approach the current and impending shortage of judges as increasingly judges will retire given the demographics.

We ask that your club contacts Tony Harding, Secretary VAPS (secretary@vaps.org.au) with any suggestions or ideas you may have in regard to increasing the number of active photography judges in Victorian clubs.

We also ask that club secretaries pass this information on to club committee and all members.

CAMERA CLUBS
Ken Spence is a camera club advocate – and with very good reason.
So, are his reasons incentive enough for you to join your local club?

When you see a heading like this, you first wonder why it isn’t a 100% guarantee. Well,
there are some photographers, such as the editor perhaps, who to be totally frank, are unlikely to substantially improve their photography by joining a camera club. For the rest of us mere mortals, this guarantee
is rock solid!

Okay, so now the second thing you are thinking is, as there is such a vast array of different camera clubs with different offerings, “ how come any one of them will improve my photography?“ There is a definitive answer to this question, but it’s a little less obvious, so read on.

There are over 200 camera clubs around Australia, with all states having an umbrella body that generally conducts an annual conference and provides other support to individual clubs in their state or territory. These umbrella bodies can be a good place to start when trying to connect with a club in your area, or otherwise give Google a go. For example, in my state of Victoria there are over 70 clubs that are affiliated with the Victorian Association of Photographic Societies and these clubs have a combined membership of over 3,400.

At a national level, there is the Australian Photographic Society, but this broadly operates as a national club for the
purposes of online photography competitions, awards and conferences, rather than as a peak body for individual
local clubs.

VAPS Newbrief History
VAPS Newsletter History

I have recently done some research into the history of the VAPS newsletter.

The earliest evidence of a VAPS newsletter, in the VAPS archives, that I can find is the ”V.A.P.S. REVIEW”,  VOL. 1  No. 1 AUGUST 1970. This small publication (of dimension 21.5 x 13.7 cms.) was 16 pages long.

By 1983 (or earlier), the newsletter had morphed into the CAMERA CLUBS’ NEWSLETTER. This was published quarterly. It had the same physical dimensions as the V.A.P.S. REVIEW.

By 1987, at least, we had the VAPS NEWSLETTER.

By 1989, the VAPS Newsbrief had come into existence, as an A4 “magazine”. This continues until today, although as a digital production.

We believe that the Newsbrief was digitised about five years ago. (It has had two editors, Barry Povey and Danielle LeGassick, as a digital production)

So we have, in summary:
a)   The V.A.P.S. REVIEW (1970s)
b)   The CAMERA CLUBS’ NEWSLETTER
c)   The VAPS NEWSLETTER (1980s)
d)   The VAPS Newsbrief (from 1989? onwards)

Tours
Exhibitions and What's On
Focal Point Darkroom & Gallery is Geelong’s centre for photography and we would like to welcome groups from visiting camera clubs.

We have a new and exciting exhibition in our expansive gallery every month. Our reference library consists of almost 700 books on photography, and we have the largest and best-equipped public-access darkroom in Australia.

We are currently installing a small studio, which will be suitable for portraiture and product photography. The studio will be fully equipped and, best of all, will be available for hire from professionals and amateurs alike.

Groups are most welcome and we can tailor your visit to suit the needs of your members. We can include a workshop on darkroom techniques or film photography in general, or simply a demonstration of producing prints in the darkroom. If your members have no interest in the darkroom I’m sure you will enjoy the exhibitions in the gallery and we will put on morning or afternoon tea.

We can also host club exhibitions, events and meetings.

There are often other great photography exhibitions in Geelong, and the region is teaming with great photographic locations, so why not make a day or a weekend of coming to Geelong and include Focal Point Darkroom & Gallery in your itinerary.

Give us a call or send an email for more information on how we can welcome your group.

Cheers,
Watto.

$6.7M Investment Announced for our National Centre For Photography

Yesterday was an incredible day for Ballarat, and one that we have been working towards for well over two years. We are thrilled to announce the $6.7 million investment by the Andrews Labor Government to develop the National Centre For Photography.

The National Centre For Photography will be a world class centre for the art of photography and photo media, with extensive opportunities for artists at a local and national level. It will transform the former Union Bank on Lydiard Street in the heart of Ballarat's Arts Precinct.

The NCFP will feature state-of-the-art gallery spaces for major temporary exhibitions, opportunities for community artists to exhibit, and a dedicated photobook library. It will host exhibitions, workshops, events, artist residencies, educational and professional development programs.

We sincerely thank Premier Daniel Andrews, Juliana Addison MP, Michaela Settle MP, Martin Pakula MP and Jaclyn Symes MP for recognising the National Centre For Photography and supporting the arts in regional Victoria. This funding is a real investment in culture and will no doubt generate significant visitation to Ballarat.

Our deepest thanks to the initial donors who created the opportunity to purchase the building in 2018; Kathy Hancock in memory of Al Ebenreuter; Alastair Firkin and Helen Myall; Paula and Richard Nicholson; and the late Michael Prior. Thank you to our architects who have been working tirelessly with us to develop the vision, Lovell Chen (Peter Lovell and Khai Chen); and our builders, Nicholson Construction.

This funding cements our ability to support the local arts community and allows the National Centre For Photography to become a leading institution within the international arts sector.

My best,

Fiona Sweet

Dear Danielle

Environmental Impact Photo Day

25th September 2021

This will be a day where you can indulge your imaginative self and show us what the words Environmental Impact mean to you whether you will be walking city streets or wandering bush trails. Images can only be captured on the day and meta data must be included when the images are uploaded for judgement.

Imagine.......Club members and individuals from all around Australia will be doing the same thing as you on Sept 25 2021 BUT in different places. What an amazing opportunity to connect through photography.

An introduction Zoom Session will be held on the previous night (24 Sept) with a special speaker.  Additionally there will be a Zoom awards event, date to be advised, after the images have been accessed which will include overall feedback on the images from photographic experts.

What will this cost the club? Just $20 per club or $5 if you are participating as an individual.‍
