President Message
Greetings everyone,

Just a quick reminder to all, that we encourage full consideration of attending this years convention.

Please go online and check out all the details on the VAPS website under the convention menu.

Registration is now in full swing and for those that book early, you have good
Choices of all the workshops available, before the numbers fill up.

After the recent lock downs and restrictions, this wonderful opportunity to gather
And share photography with each other, is not to be missed.

Enjoy Autumn, and take advantage of those lovely colours!
I am with you all in spirit, and am missing my favourite season there in Victoria.

My only consolation is that the Spring here in England, is starting to look fantastic,
And I am trying to get out and take advantage of that every day.

My best to all

Warm regards

Ian Rolfe
President VAPS
Don't forget that you can zoom in to read the detail on any image in the Newsbrief.

VAPS Information
Club Assistance

On behalf of VAPS we are approaching several clubs (primarily outer suburban only) concerning the housing of the VAPS container and trailer. Alfred Zommers has for many years housed these at his large property in Warrandyte South.  In the new year around March he will be relocating so we need to find another location to store both the container and trailer.

Both these are used primarily for the VAPS Convention, the container having many large display boards and stands for example which are used to support and present the Interclub prints at the VAPS Convention.

If you can assist with ideas or rental space or locations in your proximity that would be much appreciated. As we said, this will not be actioned till around March next year so we are proceeding and planning well in advance. Cubic sizing of both are outlined below .

Dimensions

Trailer

L = 3370

L + drawbar = 4910

H = 1960

W = 2050

Container

L = 6100

H = 2550

W = 2430

Thank you in anticipation.
VAPS Convention
 2022 Convention Wangaratta

3rd - 5th June
https://www.vaps.org.au/convention.html

VAPS holds an annual Convention every year where members of different clubs come together to learn more about photography.

There are presentations by guest speakers, workshops, and photographic excursions to participate in and of course interaction with members from other clubs.

We are looking forward to a wonderful Convention with an impressive array of presenters and workshops:-
  • Mark Raynor
  • Luke Tscharke
  • Paul Hoelen
  • Lee Herbet
  • Ellie Young
With the tremendous support of the Wangaratta Camera Club in 2022, the convention is organised by a VAPS Committee member, the Convention Director, who co-opts other committee members as required.

In addition, a nominating VAPS affiliated club helps to host the event and their members assist in organising various aspects of the Convention.

Bookings for the Wangaratta Convention are being received with the Registration system online fully active

 Judging Information
Judges Honorarium

It has come to VAPS notice that there is some misinformation about the judging honorarium. The amount of the Judging honorarium is a recommended guideline to clubs and the article can be found here:
https://www.vaps.org.au/judging-honorarium.html.

VAPS nor the APJA sets any fee amounts that judges are expected to be paid by clubs to cover any travel expenses or extra work involved in preparing audio recordings or detailed notes for remote judging.

The APJA was set up by several judges wanting to improve the standard of judging in Victoria and eventually in other Australian states. Apart from training, the APJA mentors novice judges and also provides accreditation to judges who have completed additional tasks in addition to the training courses.

The APJA started with a handful of members and since 2014 has grown to 130. Most of these are active judges and the remaining members are those interested in learning and also improving the standard of judging.

VAPS wholeheartedly supports the efforts and achievements of the APJA.

Considered being a Judge?

Clubs are asked to encourage members to consider being a photography judge. There are many benefits of being a judge. These include:

  • Exposure to a wide array of photographic work which contributes to one’s self development in photographic artistry
  • Greater confidence and experience in communication of the principles of photography
  • Receiving structured training in photographic judging including aesthetics, technical competency, photography and the law and many other aspects of photography
  • Helping others develop their skills and capabilities in the art of photography
  • Opportunities to participate in interclub and other photographic judging arenas

There are currently only 34 metropolitan members on the Victorian judges list and 18 in the country. We currently have 70 clubs and if every club has 10 competitions a year we would need all 52 judges to judge about 14 competitions a year.

That is too much of a load for any judge.  Many are only prepared to about 10 per year which means that we have a large shortage of judges.

VAPS therefore welcomes suggestions on how to approach the current and impending shortage of judges as increasingly judges will retire given the demographics.

We ask that your club contacts Tony Harding, Secretary VAPS (secretary@vaps.org.au) with any suggestions or ideas you may have in regard to increasing the number of active photography judges in Victorian clubs.

We also ask that club secretaries pass this information on to club committee and all members.

From Clubs/Societies and Others
Maroondah Camera Club
I was honoured to be asked by Neil Roberts of Maroondah Club to open his personal retrospective photographic exhibition on 11th March. He chose the works he most loved from over 60,000 images taken over 61 years and they were beautifully displayed in a light filled gallery off the historical space which houses Mont de Lancey’s main collection.

There were some brilliant works there and his achievements, which have been many over the years, were there for all to admire.

It made me realise that of all the people I know in the Victorian photographic community, few hold a personal exhibition.  Neil says it is costly and a lot of work, but so worthwhile.  He sold some images, even on that opening night, but sales are not goal. It was, for him, the delight of seeing his own work set out as a collection and on display for friends and others to enjoy.

Mont de Lancey was an excellent choice of venue. Those coming to see the Exhibition could spend further time exploring the 1880s homestead on tour with a guide who would also show them the beautiful gardens, historic timber slab kitchen, 1920s St Marys Chapel, the blacksmith’s shop and vintage engine shed and have a bite to eat at the café.

Why not do an exhibition yourself?

I am so impressed with Neil’s retrospective that I thought I might take a leaf out of his book and do one too. Mont De Lancey would be my choice of venues as it is a charity and run by volunteers though I have not rung to find out actual costs. It is not too far away from my home too.

There are many alternate exhibition spaces available of course. I am recommending VAPS members give it some thought. It is very rewarding emotionally.

Perhaps several photographic friends could do a joint one?

Margaret Zommers

Three Special Presentations in the Lennon’s Room at the Burke and Wills Hotel (12.45-5pm, 13 Sept)
There will three presentations during the afternoon with an afternoon tea break. These presentations are all linked to a hands-on session.

The first presentation will be about Lensbaby photography with Wendy Roche, and she will run two hands on sessions on the following morning in Laurel Bank Park.

"The session will start with a brief chat about me and how I became a Lensbaby addict. This will be followed up by a 35-minute PowerPoint presentation on Lensbaby. It will include an overview of the Lensbabies that are available now and creative ways to use them. Throughout the presentation I will use my own images to show the different effects that can be achieved with the Lensbabies which I own. This will include the Muse (Spark) with its individual macro rings and creative aperture rings. The Composer Pro and the Optic Swap System, the Velvet 56, the Sol 45, the Omni Flare system, the Edge 80/35, the Burnside 35. After the PowerPoint there will be 10 minutes for questions. The remaining time will be spent getting to know how to attach the lenses, feeling how different they are to use and generally just familiarising the attendees with the product. I will bring some fresh flowers which they could play around with briefly in preparation for workshops the next morning."

This will be followed by a presentation by Dan Fitch from the Toowoomba Astronomy Club, and he will take us on an enthusiastic journey into the cosmos. Dan will give a brief overview of the equipment, imaging techniques and post processing that goes into making a typical Astrophoto, and how you can do it from anywhere, with almost anything. Dan will demonstrate how wonderful Astrological images can be achieved with a DLSR camera. He will run a night photography session at Spring Buff at 7 pm the same evening.

The final presentation will be on Macro Photography and Photo Stacking with Brian Russell who is the Chairperson of Nature Group and will run two hands on sessions the following morning in Laurel Bank Park.

Macro photography lends itself to the technique of image stacking so as to achieve a greater depth of field than could ever be achieved with a single image. Having commenced macro photography on subjects such as fungi with a single image on film, the final crop had to be achieved in camera. Move forward to 2022 and I am in awe of the technology we have at our disposal today in our digital cameras to manage long exposures, more often negating the need for flash. My presentation will attempt to cover basic macro methods – lenses, lighting, equipment and technique. It will culminate in the technique of image stacking and how to achieve that with most digital cameras”.

The closest parking for the afternoon sessions will be the car park in Annand Street directly behind the Hotel ($1.90 per hour).

Highfields Pioneer Village (11am-4pm, 14 Sept)
The day trip to Highfields Pioneers Village will stimulate your imagination with a wide variety of photographic opportunities from gorgeous well-preserved relics from the past, stunning portraiture opportunities with local models inside the authentic historic buildings including a Chapel, Silversmith, Butcher shop, bakery, blacksmith, schoolhouse and many more, to the local cheeky lorikeets.  When you arrive, you’ll step onto a Model -T Ford bus for an orientation tour of the 20-acre village and then the day will unfold including a delicious lunch (assorted sandwiches followed by desert) and a tea and damper afternoon tea. You will need a walk around lens, portrait lens and perhaps a close up. Walking shoes are recommended.  Highfields Pioneer Village. Events Team members will meet you at the car park.

Dinner at Rudd's Pub (6.30pm ‘til late, 14 Sept)
The final activity of the Meet up will be a wonderful home cooked meal at the historic Rudd's Pub, the home of Dad and Dave. The rustic pub gives you the opportunity to Immerse yourself in a wonderful photographic collection and a wonderful collection of memorabilia adorns the walls (and the ceiling). There will be some surprise entertainment during the evening as the group enjoys dinner in a private room away from the main bar area.  This will be a casual fun filled evening. This guided amateur photography in Victoria for forty years. The Victorian Association of Photographic Societies was formed on 27 September 1952 and comprised of 12 clubs. This has grown to more than 70 clubs in Jan 2020. VAPS is a non-profit association that is entirely self-funded. The Association is run by an elected Committee of Management which is responsible for the operations of the Association, and for ensuring the Association fulfils the objectives.
