President Message
Hello everyone,

It was very heartening to see over 200 register for the Sunday Virtual convention program that VAPS held in early June.

Those of you who logged in and enjoyed the program were treated to a wonderful event.

Judging by the amazing feedback and all of it very positive we are extremely happy that as a committee, we decided to organise this for our Victorian Photographic community.

For those of you who did not register and take advantage of the program I am really sorry you missed it!

Our speakers of that virtual day are keen to come back and present again, at a real convention, and hopefully this will happen in 2022.

My sincere thanks as I have already mentioned on the day, to all that helped organise this truly fine virtual day of photography.

The covid crisis has stretched our patience and forbearance to the limit. Currently we can move about within our own state and so at least we have that. Winter is a brilliant time to shoot the elements! I encourage all of you to get out with your camera’s and work some creative outdoor magic when you can.

Please stay safe and healthy, and we offer you as a committee our warm regards, to every club and to every member.

Ian Rolfe
President

Meritorious Service Award

Kay Mack

Kay Mack has been an extremely active and valued member of Doncaster Camera Club for 45 years until her death earlier this year. Joining the club in 1976, she became a committee member in 1977 and for the next 16 years held significant positions on that committee, namely Treasurer (1977 – 80), President (1981-83) and Newsletter Editor (1986 – 92).

Kay established and then was the convener of The Themes and Series Special Interest Group at DCC since its commencement in 2012, a group that meets regularly and undertakes photography challenges and presentations. Kay has been a mentor to many new club members over many years. She has also advised and assisted club members with applications for VAPS awards. Kay has a special interest in Black and White photography.

The Doncaster Camera Club annually awards a perpetual Trophy, established in 2014 and called The Kay Mack Trophy for Monochrome Image of the year.  Fittingly she was awarded Life Membership of Doncaster Camera Club in 2009.

Kay began entering National Competitions in 1977 and then Internationals as well. She earned for herself a string of honours namely FAPS (1999), LAPS (1984), AAPS (1991), and SSVAPS (1994). Other awards include Les Newcombe Award for Creative Photography (2014) and Contemporary Group Award (2018).

Her contribution did not stop at club level. Kay has run numerous workshops at VAPS Conventions. The first one was in 1984 and was called “Try Something Different”. This was repeated in various forms in Victorian Camera Clubs. Kay has done many presentations to Camera Clubs over the years including – “My life in photography”, “PD Presents” and “Contemporary Division Presents”.

Since 1984, Kay has judged and presented her own work frequently at many clubs in Victoria, including Warragul, Shepparton, Horsham and many Melbourne Clubs as well as Redcliffe in Queensland in 2011.

Kay has been involved in organizing several local community events and Exhibitions.
  • Wurrundjeri Festival Photography Exhibition
  • The first four Doncaster National Exhibitions. 1984-1987.
  • “Playground Portraits” exhibition in 2003 at Templestowe Primary School
  • “Travellers’ Tales” Exhibition in 2005 at Box Hill Community Arts Centre.
  • “Chasing Shadows” Exhibition in 2006 at Gold St Studios Gallery in Collingwood.
  • “Chasing Shadows” was part of fringe section at Daylesford Biennale of Photographic Art in 2007. These were hand printed Mono Prints.

Kay joined the Doncaster Historical Society in 2003 until her death. With her photographic knowledge and expertise Kay was a valuable member, working on cataloguing the archive and scanning and printing copies of historical photographs, manning open days, improving display labelling. Kay also took part in their successful application for Museum Accreditation.

Kay has also worked with Manningham Council on photos for brochures they were producing.
Kay Mack has been an active member of APS. In that organisation she
  • Was elected to Management Committee in 1988
  • Chair of Honours Sub Committee in 1991
  • Senior Vice President 1992-94
  • President 1994-96 (First female President of APS)
  • Honorary Fellow 1999
  • Chair of Contemporary Group for 12 years 2003-2015
She was also a verifier for the APS Exhibition Honours system for many years until 2012.
Kay has taken on numerous projects and photographic work in the local community.

She was a teacher at Templestowe Park Primary School and made significant contributions there with her photographic knowledge and skills.  Kay encouraged and assisted students to enter junior photography competitions. She also taught staff members to develop and print black and white film.  She took many photographs of the school’s development, which today are a valuable historical record.

Since her retirement Kay has made several photobooks of her school photos and been invited back to speak to students.  She has donated copies of her photobooks to Templestowe Park Primary School, the Municipal Library and The Doncaster Historical society.

Reason for Nomination
Kay Mack has made significant contributions for 45 years to Doncaster Camera Club, VAPS and APS. Kay was an inspiring teacher and mentor and was always generous with her time and knowledge to Camera Club members and the local community.

Kay demonstrated for many years that photography is a valuable means of raising people’s awareness of their surroundings and community.

She always had a great interest in Contemporary photography and with her keen eye and imagination, she saw beyond the obvious to capture unique images.  She moved from film to digital and more recently phone and iPad photography, often seeing the story and enjoyment of photography as more important than technical excellence.

A VAPS Meritorious Award would be a very fitting recognition of Kay’s contributions and service to photography.  Her achievements were so numerous, so significant and so valuable that VAPS confers the ward posthumously.

 Judging Information
Over the last 12 months many clubs have had to change their club meetings to online via Zoom or other software.

Now that we are getting close to getting vaccinated and hopefully returning to a life with less risk of catching the COVID 19 virus many clubs have started to organise face to face meetings instead of online.

Hybrid meetings are another option being looked at or implemented by some clubs whereby a Zoom access option is also provided to the face-to-face meeting.

For clubs who are starting some form of face to face meetings everyone should ask themselves whether the risk is less, than what it was in the middle of last year or even just 3 months ago, and whether they are willing to accept that risk.

Things for clubs and judges to consider:
Is adequate social distancing possible?
Do the club rooms have plenty of space and plenty of ventilation (open windows)?

For handling prints clubs and judges should make themselves aware of the article written by a microbiologist in the March copy of Newsbrief.

Also another aspect is the hall or meeting place may first require a COVID Safety plan – a template is available at https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/covidsafe-plan

Judges Honorarium

It has come to VAPS notice that there is some misinformation about the judging honorarium. The amount of the Judging honorarium is a recommended guideline to clubs and the article can be found here:
https://www.vaps.org.au/judging-honorarium.html.

VAPS nor the APJA sets any fee amounts that judges are expected to be paid by clubs to cover any travel expenses or extra work involved in preparing audio recordings or detailed notes for remote judging.

The APJA was set up by several judges wanting to improve the standard of judging in Victoria and eventually in other Australian states. Apart from training, the APJA mentors novice judges and also provides accreditation to judges who have completed additional tasks in addition to the training courses.

The APJA started with a handful of members and since 2014 has grown to 130. Most of these are active judges and the remaining members are those interested in learning and also improving the standard of judging.

VAPS wholeheartedly supports the efforts and achievements of the APJA.

Considered being a Judge?

Clubs are asked to encourage members to consider being a photography judge. There are many benefits of being a judge. These include:

  • Exposure to a wide array of photographic work which contributes to one’s self development in photographic artistry
  • Greater confidence and experience in communication of the principles of photography
  • Receiving structured training in photographic judging including aesthetics, technical competency, photography and the law and many other aspects of photography
  • Helping others develop their skills and capabilities in the art of photography
  • Opportunities to participate in interclub and other photographic judging arenas

There are currently only 34 metropolitan members on the Victorian judges list and 18 in the country. We currently have 70 clubs and if every club has 10 competitions a year we would need all 52 judges to judge about 14 competitions a year.

That is too much of a load for any judge.  Many are only prepared to about 10 per year which means that we have a large shortage of judges.

VAPS therefore welcomes suggestions on how to approach the current and impending shortage of judges as increasingly judges will retire given the demographics.

We ask that your club contacts Tony Harding, Secretary VAPS (secretary@vaps.org.au) with any suggestions or ideas you may have in regard to increasing the number of active photography judges in Victorian clubs.

We also ask that club secretaries pass this information on to club committee and all members.

Wildlife Photography my Way: Musts, Myths and Tips
Genre:  Nature

Successful wildlife photography means different things to different photographers. For some it is to get an image of a unique animal or bird. For others it is simply to get an image to post on Facebook or to use in a salon or to sell. For me its to get an extraordinary wildlife image. Extraordinary is defined as the one or only of a kind or type or rare situation. Such images require very hard individual work and patience in the bush as well as knowledge of the wildlife behaviour, environmental conditions and equipment. You must be able to apply this knowledge without really thinking (quickly). Only then will you be able to predict what is going to happen and to capture an extraordinary wildlife image.
